Shri Ved Prakash Chandan

A seasoned technocrat, educationist at heart, and a passionate traveller with more than 50 years experience in the field of Telecommunication, Signalling, and Information technology. He has played a crucial role in establishing many organisations in India, Governmental and Private. He is presently Consultant to the World Bank, overseeing the implementation and monitoring progress of World Bank-financed projects for the Transportation Sector.

Mr. Chandan graduated from IIT-BHU in 1961 and completed his Master’s Degree in Communications and Radar Engineering from IIT/Delhi in 1981 while working as Joint Director (Telecom) Railway Board. He is one of the pioneers of the Telecom revolution in India. As President, Qualcomm (India) Inc., he has been credited for bringing CDMA technology in India and for propelling its commercial launch for cellular mobile services in 2001. Earlier he had spearheaded the movement for privatization of the telecommunication industry and Internet in India by getting the Government’s approval for the commercial use of surplus capacity existing in the Railways’ internal telecommunication network.

Mr. Chandan was given the ‘Outstanding Engineer of the Year Award’ (2004) by the Delhi branch of the IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers, London) for his contribution to the field of Telecommunications. The ‘IT-BHU Alumni Life Time Achievement Award’ (2012-13) was given to him for his outstanding contributions in the field of Information Technology. Mr. Chandan was also given the status of Life Senior Member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, USA) in 2014 in recognition of his achievements in Technology and for his role in the growth and development of IEEE. Mr Chandan is also a member of several professional bodies like IET (UK), IRSE (UK), IE (India), IETE, IMA, etc.
